Over £IBSO has been collected at Wellington for the family of Kenny, the driver of the service car, who was killed recently on the Hutt Road. At the same time collections are actively going on for the unemployed fund. 11l Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin heavy withdrawals of spirits from bond have been reported. In each centre the .revenue for the month has eclipsed that for a correspondiing period last year by ia substantial amount. The withdrawals are no- -doubt due to the reported increase an the -duty on wines and spirits.
A female (resident of Hawera who was arrested on a charge of drunkenness in South Road shortly before one o'clock this morning by Constable P. J. Mufiian, pleaded guoiity of the offence oefore Mr. J. S. Murray, J.P. She was convicted and fined ten shillings. The attention of football enthusiasts is drawn to the alteration in the tames of Saturday's matches. A new development in the fertiliser war is that, although the Challenge Phosphate Company recently announced its intention to increase the price of superphosphate from £4 2s Cd net to £4 12s 6d net as from August 1, the other two companies, Kempthorne Prosser and Co., and the New Zealand Farmers ’ Fertiliser Co., with works operating at Auckland, Taranaki and Wanganui, announce thar I 'their price will remain at £4 2s 6d a ton to farmers, net cash, on truck at works, states a Press Association message from Auckland.

The natives of the Hastings Road have for some time been, engaged at 'lvaponga in the fbuldd-uig of ,a large size canoe for fishing purposes. This will ibe transported to their pa tomorrow. In- older to avoid friction with any traffic that may foe met on the route, the natives advise- that the canoe will foe taken over the Palmer, Duthlie, Bit ham. Hastings and Von Tempsky Roads -between eight and nine o'clock in the morning.
The following resolution was passed at a; meeting of the Baptist Churches in Wellington: “That this meeting of the Council of the Baptist Central Auxiliary, comprising churches from Napier and New Plymouth to Wellington and Nelson, emphatically protests against the attempt at present being made in Parliament to increase gambling facilities throughout the Dominion, and urges -all members of the Legislative Assembly to vote against this retrograde measure. ’ ’ The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, promised a deputation at Wellington yesterday representing the Hospital Boards Association, that he would consider the request for legislalation empowering the boards to collect fees from single men without dependents in accident cases. He would also consider the request for a means of -collecting fees from Maori patients, but denied the truth of the general assertion that the Maoris did not pay rates. There was a big blaze at Tolcomau Bay yesterday, which destroyed a business 'block owned by the Tokomaru Trading Company and -occupied by professional and business firms. One family escaped in their night wear and practically nothing was saved. The firms affected were Messrs Nugent (solicitor), Todd (solicitor) Bennett Taylor (chemist), McCulloch (tailor), L. Morral (dentist), Chaffey (carrier), Moody (restaurant). , The insurances were not available.
The Gisborne Harbour Board has decided on the recommendation of Mr. Furkert, engineer in chief to the Public Works Department, to proceed to dredge the inner basin at Haiti with a view to providing a good coastal harbour and postponing the prosecution of the outer work for the meantime. The board is considering a hire offer for the dredge Maui, which has been moored for some years at Auckland harbour. The Marine Department proposes to use the Maui for the development of the AVestport harbour and offers £SO per week with remission of two months in twelve for lost time. The Gisborne Board accepted the general terms, but is willing to offer only >one month’s remission. The Maui is fitted for bucket or suction dredging in deep water.
