FARMERS’ UNION
THE WOMEN’S BRANCH
Very interesting and! useful work is being done by the women’s branch of the Farmers’ Union, whose executive for South Taranaki met at Hawera yesterdav. Mils W. E. Carter (Mangatoki) presided, and there were also present Mesdames D. M. Cameron (Okaiawa), Prestidge (Eltkam), Barker (Awatuna), E. Meuli (Hawera), McCarty and Miss O’Sullivan (Manutahi). . The shop day return of £8 13s it was decided to allocate as follows: £5 to Bush Nursing Fund and the balance to general expenses. The president reported that the membership was steadily increasing, seven new members having enrolled since last month. The annual conference would lie held in Wellington on July 27, and 1 Mesdames Carter and Cameron stated they would lie present. The question of a book club for country districts was considered. _ It was decided to get more information, but the opinion was expressed that the present postal rates would be prohibitive. A scheme for making infants clothing in connection with the Bush Nursing Association was proposed, and it was agreed to make a call on each "member for a small amount and proceed' with the making of clothes. Advice was received from Masterton of a badge design competition for the organisation, with a prize of £1 Is. to the successful competitor. The division’s colours are to be used, and the letters N.Z.W.D.F.U. are to be worked into the design. The scheme was approved, but it was resolved to approach the school teachers with a view to giving the children an opportunity of showing their ability in that direction. A vote of thanks to the chair conchided the meeting.
