LONDON, June 1
In the House of Commons, discussion on a clause in the Trade Union Bill permitting the Attorney-General to obtain an injunction restraining the application of trade union funds to illegal strikes, produced a legal duel between Sir Douglas Hogg and Mr Et. A. Harney. The latter assailed the clause as a “back stair’’ method of giving the Attorney-General unprecedented powers.
Sir Douglas Hogg quoted at length .Statutes and precedents. Mr Harney indignantly protested that Sir Douglas Hogg was supercilious and patronising, whereupon the Conservatives shouted him down.
Sir Douglas Hogg explained that the clause applied to the employers’ union in exactly the same way as to the workmen’s union. Tf he supported a lockout. the individual employers who utilised orivate funds for such a purpose was liable to imprisonment for three' months. The c’ause was carried l by 235 votes to 135. )
