Generally there is a firm feeling in the grain and produce trade. Values in most cases? are below the cost of production and when .such is the case the way is .ready to meet any sudden demand that may develop.
The bri.ske.st trade at the moment is iii. the potato iyectdon. Tk>-da.y prompts fair next week’® boat are worth £3 os a ton on truck® and Junes have been sold freely at £3 10s. The f.o.b. sacks in sales have been on a basis of up to £4 12s 6d. The Waipiata, at the beginning of the week, took up to 3500 sacks from Timaru -and Lyttelton, but the- next- vessel, the Katoa, is not due to leave until Tuesday or Wednesday. Not much wheat is changing bands-. At the moment round about us- 7d a bushel on trucks is being paid- by the millers operating. The latter, however, are a- small section of the milling fraternity. As a whole, oat-® are inclined to- be weaker, though A Garton-s are quoted for Lyttelton up to 3s 5-Jd -and for South Island ports to 3$ 4jd. B’s are woi-th 3s Id to 3s 2d f.o.b. sack-® in, or 2s od on trucks as 3d more. Farmers are not crowding the market at the values prevailing, and the shortage of winter feed fo,r stock and the inevitability of their hand feeding having to be- resorted t-o i® discouraging offers. At the present quotations chaff is in sound demand afc £3 10s a ton on trucks. LONDON TALLOW MARKET. The Think of New Zealand, produce department has received the following advice ’from its London office under date May 25: Tallow.—There is a fair demand, Oiiirrent quotations : Good mutton, 35s (id to 365: per cwt; good beef, 36s to 36s 6d ; -.000(1 mixed, 35s 6d to 36-s; gut, 2Hs to 325.
Messrs Da/goty and Co., Ltd., report having .-received the following; cablegram from t’;eir London house, under date of 25th in.st: —Tallow. 1670 casks offered. 250 casks sold: prices. Gd per cwt. lower. We quote, fine mutton, 36s (kl; good mixed, 365: inferior 325.
