STOCK MARKETS.

GOOD BUSINESS BEING DONE. ACTIVITY IN SEVERAL LINES. Despite the problems opposing the farmers, and especially the dairy farmesr, satisfactory business is reported in many lines of stock, and in some cases tnere is la keen demand which stock men find much difficulty in meetMoist activity is shown in sheep, and there the chief difficulty lies in supplying the needs of prospective buyers. Ewes in 'lamb, wethers of good quality, and ewe lamb® are in strong, demand, and ta small “parcel”, of the last-named brought the good figure of 17® 3d. Generally there is an inquiry that is very hard to supply. All that is offering, if the quality is there, is snapped up readily. Fat cattle are reported to be improving, and one grazier in a large way reports a. difficulty in securing his requirements. In store cattle fair business is being done, but holders appear inclined to hold for higher values. The period’ of activity of heifers in calf has not set in. strongly, but there is a keen demand for good sorts. The prices are, under all the circumstances, quite isatisfactory. The indications are that when this demand really sets in, it will 'be very active. Heavy culling has -taken place all over the province, and these gaps in the herds must be filled. As those farmers who save calves keep only a small number, there is certain to be a difficulty in supplying all the needs. There is also considerable business being done in pigs, and a good- yarding at Thursday’s Haiwera, sale wa® cleared, store prices going up to -between 27s and 30s.

The first horse fair will be held shortly, and though it is expected there will not be a- great demand, the winter sale is useful. First quality utility farm horses have been fetching good prices at the recent clearing sales. Altogether the position in the stock markets is not by any means bad, and prospects are fairly good in most directions.
