RHEIMS CATHEDRAL
RE-OPENED FOR WORSHIP
first Time singe War.
A SOLEMN CEREMONY
BX CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT, Received 12.5 p.m-. to-day. PARIS, May 11. Though, restoration has not been completed, the- Rheinis Cathedral has been re-opened for public worship lor the first time since the war, when M. Herriot solemnly hianded the key of the basilica to Cardinal Lucon, who remained among the people until the fire started and German shells in 1917 drove him from his house. M. Herriot, addressing the assembly, said" that the civilised world watched the work of destruction in stupor. All creeds and opinions felt the wounds of the cathedral as if they had been suffered in Jiving flesh. There were good Frenchmen and ardent friends of Rheinis who had really wished .the basilica should remain as it was, as a lesson. Such a- decision would have marked the capitulation of the spirit before brutality and violence. Restoration wa,s imperative. —A us. Press and “Sun.”
