ALLEGED THEFT OF £968. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, May <3. “Two other charges are pending, and- X therefore ask that- -bail be substantial,” said! Detective- Sergeant Holmes when Jane Ann Johnston appeared before Mr Riddell, S.M., at the court to-day charged with having broken into by day and entered- tlie house of Lucy l Ellen Mantou and stolen jewellery, clothes, linen and other property* to the total value of £968 13-s 6d- belonging to Mrs Manton. The accused was already on bail on a charge of having broken into and entered Te Aro House with intent to commit a) crime. A remand was granted till Wednesday, bail of £l5O and' two sureties of £75 each being ■allowed.
SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A YOUTH. DUNEDIN, May 6. At tlie Supreme Court a youth named James Robert Stanley Sutherland was found guilty of ul serious offence against a girl io years of age. He was remanded for sentence. “TOTE” TICKET SOLD TO YOUTH.
WELLINGTON, May 6. A female totalisator employe© was to-day fined £1 by Mi' Riddell, S.M., for -selling a, “tote” ticket to a youth aged 19, the law stipulating that only persons over the age of 21 were entitled to- purchase tickets. The magistrate did not regard the offence as serious.
RECEIVING STOLEN MONEY.
CHRISTCHURCH, May G. A fourth man, John Erasmuson, appeared to-day in connection with the alleged theft of a big sum of money from the Railway Department, he being charged that he received £33 from two of the others, knowing it tq have been stolen. He pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence. Tho accused said he had been ill and while off duty John James Neilson drew his pay. SERIOUS CHARGE ADMITTED. MASTERTON, May 6. George Edivan Pain, a dairy farmer of aituna, pleaded guiKlty at the court to-day to a charge of incest, and was committed to Wellington for sentence. BREAKING AND ENTERING. EKETAHUNA, May G. A youth named Laurence Desmond Tanner, whose license at Weraroa had .justiexpired, pleaded guilty at the Magistrate ’s Court this morning to breaking and entering the house of G. F. Jaspers, farmer, of Newman, where lie was previously employed, and stealing money, etc-., to the value f £l6 16s 6d. He was -committed to the Wellington Supreme Court for sentence. Bail was not applied for.
A BARMAN’S MISTAKE. WELLINGTON, May 6. A barman at the White Swan hotel, named Daniel Graham, who thought chat so long as men had meals on the premises be was entitled to- supply them with liquor, was to-day fined £3 in respect to an offence committed on Good Friday. A similar penally was imposed on the licensee, Nicholas Milligan, although the Magistrate said it was clear that the barman acted without Milligan’s authority. Three men concerned, Sydney Robur Salmon, Alexander Morrice Smith, and Allan Patrick McGrath, were each fined £1 for being illegally on the premises.
