MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.
GENERAL EFFECT IN WELLING- " TON. ‘ RATING, ON UNIMPROVED, VALUE. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, April 29. The general effect of the municipal elections in tire city is that the Civic League returned 27 candidates out of 33, in addition to- the mayor. Labour lost a -seat on the council and oiie on the hospital board, and only has two representatives on eiaeh. The voting was little more than half the number on the- rolls. In the unimproved value issue, a strong movement had recently been made in favour of cancelling it altogether, on the ground that all big buildings, now being freely erected, escaped paying their fair share to the rates. By 8334 to 4262 votes, however, the electors decided In favour of extending the principle to all rates. This was a. triumph for Labour.
The councillors returned were: Messrs T. C. A. ITisiop, W. J. Gaudin, G. Mitchell, W. H. Bennett, R. Semple, M. M. F. Luekie, H. A. R. Huggins, J. Caughle-y, R. W. MeVilly, F. Meadoweroft, J. Burns, H. D. Bennett, R. McKeen, B. G. H. Burn, and J. Aston. For the Wellington Hospital Board, H. Van Stavern, C. M. Luke, F. Oastle, Annie McViear W. Appleton, J. G. Petheriok, F. Bennett, Jianet Fraser, Jane K. Preston, D. Campbell, J. H. Helliwell, H. A. Parkinson, Margaret Semple, and T. H. Gill wore elected.
