LEVEL CROSSING ACCIDENT.
THE CORONER’S VERDICT. (by telegraph—press association.) TE KUITI, April 23. The adjourned inquest was held yesterday afternoon concerning the circumstances surrounding the deaths at a railway crossing, on February 24 last, of George Mc-Ilroy, his wife and two children. Alice Mary Gospodnetich, one of the occupants of the car at the time of the accident, gave evidence on similar lines to that given at the preliminary inquiry, which showed that the car was travelling at 15 miles per hour, and the train at 25 to 30 miles when the crash occurred. The engine-driver and. fireman gave corroborative evidence. Herbert Dick, the driver ; was of the opinion that the crossing was one of the most dangerous between Auckland and Taumarunui. The coroner brought in a verdict that the deceased met their deaths by the car being struck by the train, and that no blame was attached to the driver of the train. He also added a rider that many motorists did not take sufficient care when going over railway crossings.
