ANNUAL APPEAL. SALES IN HAWERA. KEEN PUBLIC SUPPORT. The Women’s National Reserve oi Hawera undertook the organisation of the sale on Poppy Day of copies of the colourful flower which was familiar to those who saw service in Flanders. The poppies this year were a .splendidly executed consignment. In some other years the supply has come from France, which has shared in the profits accruing from the sales. In Hawera the supply received! totalled 1500. Of these 980 were sent to the country, and the remainder re served for sale in town. The sales in Hawera opened' at 9 a.in., and brisk business was done from the commencement. The sellers’ chief stand was in front of Messrs McGruer, Bone and Co. Working under the president of the Women’s National Reserve and its _ secretary ("Mrs E. A. Pacey .and Miss' Bnllantine, respectively), a troop of Boy Scouts canvassed the streets in house-to-house sales. They met with an excellent response. By 10 a .in. a: big inroad bad; been made in supplies, and the ladies were confident that a verv satisfactory result would be obtained. The weather was ideal for such an occasion, and, as the morning wore on till noon, the buttonholes of men and women alike were increasingly burdened with the emblem of the cocknit of the European battle centre. In the afternoon, Mrs Bullock and; Miss Corrigan took charge, and carried to a: conclusion a- work in which the reserve, as usual, displayed nraefion 1 efficiency and obtained good results.
WELLINGTON’S EFFORT. (by telegraph—press association.) WELLINGTON, April 22. Poppy Day resulted in nearly £IOOO being collected in the streets to-day.
COLLECTION AT DUNEDIN
DUNEDIN, April 22,
The apnual Poppy Day appeal, held in Dunedin to-day, resulted in over £475 being raised. This sum does not include returns from suburban and country centres. It is also anticipated that the totall will be considerably augmented by returns in the city which have yet to be handed in. The money will be used to provide employment and relief for distressed or*-workless ex-service, men. The effeet of unemployment and the general tightness of the money market, is reflected in the sum, which shows some reduction on last year’s total.
