ALTON SPORTS.

HELD IN WET WEATHER. SEVEN-A-SIDE REG BY. Though the weather yesterday was very unpropitious, the sports meeting at Alton was proceeded with. Due to rain, the- programme did not start as early as had been intended, but, as the afternoon wore oil, a large number of the: residents of the district assembled to see the Rugby ,seven-a-side tournament, which, in the absence of inducement to hold running events, provided the chief sourc-c of amusement. The scene of the sports was Air A. J. Gibbs’ paddock, which had bem suitably prepared for the occasion. The meeting was the second annual one, and was held in aid of the funds of the Alton Football Club. The proceedings were in the hands of a capable secretary. Air F. H. Gusli, who was assisted by a general committee composed of 'Messrs J. Pkrcv, H. J. Clemance, 11. Davies, J. Jones, G. Green, J. Furby, and V. Adlan. Other officials were: Air A. J. Gibbs, judge; Air J. Jones, handicapper; Messrs J. Piercy, V. Adlam and J. Fur by, novelty committee. Besides the junior Rugby, there were races for children, chain stepping and guessing competitions. An unfortunate incident was an; accident in which A .Hodge, of Alton, broke a leg in tire course of p'lay. He was removed to the house of Air A. J. Gibbs, and received attention from Dr. Simmonds. Airs AY. Green won the slieepguessing competition with 1061bs, as againist 107 lbs (the actual weight of the animal). Air C. Richards stepped the actual 22 yards in tho chain, competition. Seven teams took part in the, seven-a-siide junior Rugby competition, and, despite the greasy ball, some vieiry good contests took place. The results were as under: — FIRST ROUND. Okaiawa 3 beat Alton B 0. Alton A 11 heat High School B 0. High School A heat Patou 0. Knkaramea a by'e. SECOND ROUND. Okaiawa 11 beat High School 0. High School A beat Alton A 0. FINAL. Okaiawa 12 beat High School 0. Okaiawa: Dodd (captain), D. Blair, CJ. Blair, O. Clarke, Tippetts, Ngaia, Awahou. High School A: Standish (captain), Wills, Clements, J. Gower, D. Gower, Alurdocb, and Morrissey. With Sehool wearing the Alton colours to he distinct from Okaiawa’,s red and black. Alurdocb kicked off. A useful kick by Wills into the opposing territory was nmlMfied by am infringement. Okaiawa assumed the offensive, and handled the greasy ball with fair precision, with the result that Awahou scored ten yards from the posts. Dodd failed with the kick. Morrissey was caught on liis touch inside the 25. He threw Hie ball to his full-hack, who could not secure possession, and was beaten by three Okaiawa, men. D. Blair picked up and,scored between the posts. Clarke converted, putting his side eight points in the lead. After half-time School attacked for a space, but the score against them was further increased by D. Blair, who again boat alt tbo opposition. His own attempt at conversion failed. The final score was: Okaiawa 11, High School 0. Air A. Murphy was the referee.
