THE RIVERINA

WEATHER MODERATING. BROADSIDE TO SEAS. PRECARIOUS POSITION. BY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. MELBOURNE, April 19. A message received iiom the R.berina states that the Goulburn is standing by, and the weather is showing signs of moderating. '1 he ship is tailing no water and everybody is well. The Goulburn wiielessed that the weather was moderating, bur there was stiff a big sea swell and it was not advisable to make a hawser fast until the weather moderates still jurtlier. The- steamer Mtacumba from Melbourne, which went to the assistance of the Riverina, lias arrived. The officers report that they consider the position of the Riverina precarious, as she is lying broadside on to the pounding seas, which are breaking over her, and state that there is lithe hope of refloating her, though the passengers, for the present, are quite safe. SYDNEY, April 19. Fishermen at Mallacoota state that tli© Riverina is too firmly embedded in the- sand to be got off. and the passengers will have to be landed by means of a “flying fox.” The Riverina is live or six miles off the course usually taken by ships. The Goulburn is unable to come close in, ami the fishermen are pattoiling the beach day and night in case assistance may be net tied

MAY BE TAKEN ASHORE. WHEN WEATHER MODERATES. deceived 11 a .in. to-day. SYDNEY, April 20. The weather at the scene of the Kivi. rina’s strandmo- is moderating, but the seas are still too- high to permit the ■steamer Gouiburn to get close to- liei\ The suggestion was made by Captain Pariy, of thy Riverina. that if lilt 1 ' weather did not moderate sufficiently this morning for the passenger's to .be transfer i©tl to the Gonlbunni that they .should be taken ashore at low tide. The Riverton is time hundred feet from the shore at. 'ow tide, and it would probably be easier to transfer Hie passengers to the shore than to tranship them to the Goulburn. No decision will be rVnehed, however, until the weather prospects are brighter. ('aptaiii Barry stated that a sandbank was formin'" on the .seaward .side of the Riverina. All aboard were well and eoinfortab’e. The vessel was not making water. The tug St. Olaves is unable- to leave for the scene owing to tempestuous seas. The tug St. Oiles has not been reported since it left Sydney. Unless she is sheltering, -she should now bo near the R iverina.
