TROTTING.

HAWEBA EASTER MEETING. PROSPECTS FOB SATURDAY. The Hawcra Trotting Club’s annual meeting opens on Saturday next and gives every promise of being even more popular than any of its predecessors. Some few years ago, this was an obscure gathering, but thanks to a very live lot of members, the meeting to-day, is an important, one in the world of trotting. The meeting held recently bj- the Manawatu, Taranaki and Wanganui Trotting Clubs, has been beneficial to owners of tratters and pacers, and the form shown at these meetings, should be a guide to the betting public attending the Hawera Trotting Club’s meeting. But just here it may be stated, that some of the competitors at recent meetings, can be expected tO' show a hundred per cent, improvement on Saturday and Monday next. Ngahuia finished very fast at Wanganui last Monday, and will pace a solid twelve furlongs in the Auroa Handicap on Saturday. The-well-bred Enawah is a particularly promising youngster, and won so easily at Wanganui, that she must command the greatest respect. Providing she keeps down, Lady Ena is capable of trotting a good mile and a half, but she has a bad habit of “mixing” when asked to do her best. She won very easily at Wanganui last Monday, but she will have to do better in the Matapu Handicap, if she is to beat Great Change who finished really well in fourth place on Monday last. A fine field has been accepted for in the Ilawera Trotting Cup, and the race should be most interesting and exciting. The pick of the handicap is Logan Park. He recently beat a large and useful field at Fo’rbury Park, and a couple of weeks ago he again beat a useful lot (at Timaru) winning easily in 4.40 2-5 a time he could have improved on. He is handicapped to go 4.4.1 on Saturday, so if he paces correctly Logan Park will be most dangerous. Gold Jacket went 4.37 1-5-at Thames recently, and from 60 yards behind must be considered. The Shrew finished very nicely in fourth place at the Wanganui meeting on Monday last, and n better performance can be expected from her on Saturday, as she is well just now. Meb won nicely at Adding ton last month, but may find the two miles on a “dead” track, just a little beyond her.

Of a large field engaged in the Stratford Handicap, the improving Hal Huon sliould have admirers. Karma may show improvement on Wanganui form, and Abundance is capable of pacing a good mile and a half.

A number of good straight-out trotters will contest the Manaia Handicap, and of them Great Change, Peterson, and Raima should command respect. Great Kevin showed surprising speed, and made an exhibition of the field at Wanganui from a pacer like Liberate in the Normanby Handicap. On recent form Explosion is much above the average, and although a useful field will go ffo the post for the President’s Handicap, Explosion should not lack support. Hori Dillon paces well and is on the upgrade, and should at least, make the event interesting.

Some speedy pacers are engaged in the Eltham Handicap, and the contest is sure to be a close one. The Taranakiowned Mary Audubon will have a good following, but Meb, Logan Park, and Respect are certain to cause her trouble.
