NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By ; 'Maecenas,’’)

The well-seasoned, Eloquent- should run well in the Maiden Hack Handicap at the AY airarapa meeting on Saturday next. Kilmezzo is galloping well just now and has many admirers for the Mokai Hack at the YV airarapa meeting. Now that L. G. Morris has been put out of action, he is trying to secure the ride on Commendation for his brother (B. H. Morris), who would ndt be- a bad substitute.

Vesperus rail well' enough at the Masterton meeting to suggest that he will run well in the ciiier race at the Wairarapa meeting. Ruakura won so well at Opaki last week that a race like the Ferry Hack Handicap at Taulierenikau on Saturday may find her a good favourite. The untimely accident to L. G. Morris at the YS anganui Trotting Club’s meeting will cause a lot- of inconvenience to owners. It was originally intended that L. G. Morris would ride Glenross and Tukia at Feilding on Saturday, journeying to Ellers lie to ride Commendation in the St. Leger on Monday. J. Cammick (Auckland) has been engaged to ride Papatu in the Easter Handicap. He will also ride Automne and Auriculus in their respective engagements next Saturday. YV. H. Jones will steer The Thorn in the Easter Handicap. His other mounts on Saturday will include King YY'illonyx, and whichever of Quincoma or Barometer is started in the President’s Handicap.

J. AVregliitt is to have the mount on Serang in the Easter Handicap. Other riding engagements that have been made for Saturday are: "YV. Rennie, Royal Abbey; E. YVarner, Hay Bell; B. Price, Gold Peak; E. Garrett, Sir Rosebery and AA’aiau Lad; IT. YY’iggins, Speechless and Princess Ronnie; R. McTavish, Pegaway, Day Guard, and PJiaola. The Auckland horseman H. Dulieu will go south to ride Royal Flight, Royal Blood, and True Blood in their engagements at Feilding at Easter. An Invercargill report states that J. S. Potter, who has just completed his term of apprenticeship with F. Tilley, will go south and join J. A. Rowlands’ stable. The Mnnawatu Racing Club’s meetings are so widely popular that an attractive list- of entries is always to be anticipated when a meeting is on the tapis at Awapuni. The forthcoming Gathering, which is fixed to bo held on Thursday and Saturday, April 23 and 30, promises to be one of the most successful that has been held on the Awapuni course. The weights for the first day’s racing are due to appear on the 20th inst.

Tiie Waikato Racing Club has received a capital list of entries for the -approaching autumn meeting at To R.apa, and matters may he said to share most promisingly for a record gathering The weights for the first dav’s events are to lie declared on April 25.

AUCKLAND R.C. MEETING. Bettors will probablv have to pick the Great Northern Oaks in one, as the contest is almost certain to be ot

one dividend dimension. Lady Desmond will need only to reproduce Rangitikei Cup form to give her opponents more than, they wish. Recent track form suggests that Cimabue is back to his best form, but even at this Gascony will make him do his best in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. A big field will contest the Brighton Hurdles, and as few of the acceptors have any recent form over jumps, it will confuse backers. Archibald is going well, and may win for the second time, while Rangatahi and Peter Rosa are a pair worthy of consideration. YY'ith such a number of good ‘boilers” engaged in Saturday’s Easter Handicap, luck may play a leading part in its decision. YY’ith average luck Joy .King, Magna Oharta, High Pitch, and Reremoana all must figure prominently, and the first named in particular "should prove hard to dispose of. Some smart two-year-olds are engaged in the Onslow Stakes, and the prospects of several look bright. Auratum finished so well at the last YY cllingtoii meeting that she must claim respect, while Melissa may also go well. The President’s Handicap is very open, but Eden Hall and Pegaway have good recent form as a recommendation, and the pair are certain to be well supported.

FEILDING J.C EASTER MEETING

As usual, the Taranaki province is well represented by horses at the Feilding meeting, and, as in former years, will play prominent parts in the decision of some of the races. As A ninth has won in Ji is last three attempts over jumps,’lie is entitled to respect for the Kawa Kawa- Hurdles. Most trouble may come from Kalakaiiaand Blood Red.

A large field will probably contest the Ongo Hack Handicap, and amongst the number engaged are some promising hacks. Town Bird is one that has shown speed against useful fields, while Hatlior lias a- private reputation, and Y'ast Acre has shown pace. In Glenross and Shining Armour trainer F. Tilley holds a strong hand for the chief event, and the better of the pair will be hard to beat. This may be Glenross. who raced well in his last couple of starts. A particularly good lot of hacks are accepted for in the Taonui Hack Handicap. Of them Valkon is most promising, and recent racing suggests that Rising Star is better than many imagine. At 8.11 Tukia is nicely handicapped for the Mangaone Handicap, and she will be one of the favourites on Saturday. Royal Damon, with the same impost, is another that lias many admirers.

Paitonu has shown most consistent lorrn this autumn, and in his last, ’start (at Bulls) made an exhibition ol Ins opponents. If as well now, lie must u.L'Tiiit provo hard to bout- in tho ()nopii }i i .Flack f Fomina p on Saturday. > When at, his best; True Blood is a decidedly useful three-year-old, and lie should race well in the Hal com be High-weight at Feilding. The Taranaki trio, Glengariff, Vivo, and Blue Peter must, all be considered in this event
