PERSONAL ITEMS.

Messrs IT. G. Dickie, M.P., and J. B. Murdoch, who have been on a visit to Wellington, (returned to Hawera by ill? mail train last evening. Mi sis Phyllis Steadman, lias been appointed assistant teacher at the K'ltham School. Her appointment dates from May 1. Mr. J. S. Macdonald, relieving clerk of court at Ml chain for the past month, returned to Ids homo in Wanganui yesterday. Mr Herbert Taylor left to-day for Wellington, where he will join Mr F. C. Spratt, who has recently commenced the practice of his profession in that city. His many friends will wish_him success in the wider field, of Wellington. Complimentary remarks were made at the annual meeting of the Hawera Savage Club concerning the work of Messrs Ollerenshaw (hon. conductor), J. Rcmvick (hon. musical director), and C. H. Suisted (hon. auditor), and they were all unanimously re-elected for the coming season.

Mr j. Houston, of Hawera, was j passenger by the south express this morning. He is proceeding on a holiday visit to Dunedin.

Mr Stan Lay, of Hawera, the javelin throwing champion of New Zealand and Australia, left by the south express to-day for Wellington, where lie. is to give an exhibition at the sports meeting of the Wellington Amateur Athletic Association, to bo. held this evening.

The. laic former Commissioner of Police. John O’Donovan, whoso death was announced yesterday, was well known in Hawera. While here he studied law and passed his legal examinations. The late officer was born in 'lreland, and joined- the Now Zealand force in 1870. He was appointed to the rank or sergeant in 1898, and became an inspector in 1902, and in 1916 was appointed Commissioner, from which position he retired in 1922. He was in charge of the police during the tour of the Prince of Wales. The deceased was made a sergeant at Wellington. and he received his promotion to sob-inspector in the .same city. He was then transferred to Palmerston North as- sub-inspector, and was there at the time of the Powelka scare. From Palmerston he went to Napier ns inspector in 1914. and on leaving Napier he was transferred to Dunedin as snnerinteudont. and later returned to Wellington in the same capacity before he was promoted to Commissioner.
