CYCLING ON FOOTPATHS.

DANGER. TO CHILDREN. URGED BY MAGI STB ATE. The dangerous nature of the practice of riding bicycles on footpaths, and particularly the risk to children, was urged by Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., in the Juvenile Court at Hawera to-day, when a youthful defendant appeared as the result of police inquiries concerning a serious mishap suffered recently by a child six years of age. The police stated that the child was found on a footpath within the borough with ia broken Teg. Tlie child alleged that it had been knocked down by a bicycle. It was proved to the court that defendant had been riding a bicycle on the footpath at about the time and place of the accident-,, but he denied having knocked the child down, ■and no proof that he did so was given to- the court. In view of the injuries sustained by the child, however, the magistrate deckled to give 'publicity to the facts, as an illustration of the danger whichthreatens children by the -practice of riding bicycles on footpaths.
