GOITRE.
CONTROL OF SALES. The control of the .sale of goitre remedies, save under a prescription h.y a doctor, was foreshadowed at the quarterly meeting of th© Board of Health, it- being stated that the department proposed to seek such power. The question says an or change, was introduced by the Hon. W. H. Triggs, who stated that he intended to move that the Director-General of Health he requested! to consider in the iignt of recent research, the system of administering iodine to school children, anti that there also- be issued for public information a warning against the indiscriminate use of so-called goitre The Deputy-Director-General oi Health (Dr. M. H. Watt) reviewed the research which, had been undertaken by Professor Hercus and other departmental officers under the. auspices of the department, and gave details as to how the present system, of administering iodine to school children had been adopted. He .stated that there hat' been no evidence that the administration of iodine to school children in accordance with the present policy, hail been productive of harm, but that there had been very definite evidence of good results. It had, therefore, been decided to continue the administration of iodine under the supervision of the school medical .staff. With regard to the -sale of goitre remedies, the department proposed to seek the power to control the sale of these remedies, save under a prescription by a doctor. In addition the department would continue to urge the use of jod.ised salt in areas which were recognised as epidemic goitre areas.
