The Berkeley expedition, which is sponsored by the University of California, is killing; two whales daily, and obtaining pituitary glands for experimental purposes. The carcases are set adrift when a tiny organ at the base of the brain is extracted. A barrel of these glands will finally be delivered to Professor Max Dunn, who hopes to separate the constituent elements, and find the agency which • causes the whales’ tissues to grow to leviathan proportions, and so possibly solve the secret* structure of all animal life.
