NOTES AND COMMENTS. i

(By ‘‘Maecenas.’’) In addition to the Wellington and Opunalte meetings next week, the Waimate (Canterbury) and Ohinemuri Clubs open their meetings on Thursday next, During the holiday meetings held in Taranaki at Christmas and New Year, Bcvis showed form equal to his best Judging by recent track work, Bevis will run well in future events. In the early spring, Stormy made a decent on Australia, and was successful every start. He is again being taken across for the late autumn racing. Amongst a number of New Zealand owned horses going over to Australia for the Easter campaign is old Sir Rose berry, his special mission being the rich Onkaparinga Steeplechase. As Sir Boseberry is getting on in years, it is doubtful if he will attain his best form. Reremoana finished with such dash in the Jackson Stakes at Wanganui, that even with 9.8 he will' be one of the best backed if a runner for the Thompson Handicap on Thursday next. Up to his win in the last Taranaki Stakes, The Hawk had not shown form for a long while. At the Wanganui meeting which followed The Hawk displayed exceptional brilliancy, but the small track w-as against him, and he could do no bettor than third. If a runner at Trentham next week he will not lack admirers.

For many years the Wellington and Manawatu autumn meetings v r ere held within a week of each other, but this year the Wellington meeting is being held about six weeks earlier than thae of the Manawatu Racing Club. Limerick has been working wonderfully well at Riccarton, and in view of his Australian engagements it is pleasant reading to his admirers, but as the son of Limond has not raced for over four months he will have to be a superhorse to beat his well seasoned opponents.

Although Whenuanui carried his big weight over six furlongs at Wanganui like a champion, it may be found that even with a feather-weight, he may not be capable of running out a solid mile, like the Thompson Handicap generally is.

Some good judges consider that in an effort to win with him over the mile and half of the. Great Northern Derby course the brilliancy that Lvsander showed in the spring racing was* impaired considerably in later racing. It will be interesting to see how Lysander shapes at Trentham. , Next week will be an interesting one for Taranaki followers of racing, as the Opunake Racing Club’s annualmeeting takes place on Thursday next, while the Wellington Racing Club will hold their autumn meeting on Thursday and Saturday next. Horses trained in this province are in strong evidence at both meetings. Pogaway was an exceptionally good hack, and even in “open’’ company is quite capable of holding his own. A younger brother in King Peg, has recently made his debut to racegoers, and he, too, is endowed with the family speed. King Beg is engaged at Ohinemuri next week, and if favoured with luck on the tricky track at Paeroa, he may give trouble to his opponents. WANGANUT TROTS. Owners and Trainers are reminded that nomination.® for all events, for the above trots, to be held on April 9 and 11. close on. Friday next, 18th inst.
