TENNIS

WAIOKURA v. MANAIA C. At the Waiokura tennis courts last Wednesday a friendly match was played between a team irom V\ aiokura and a O team lrom tne Manaia club. Although the home team won all the matches, the play nevertheless was keen and inteiesting throughout. ' The afternoon was perfect for tennis, and the courts, although somewhat bumpy on the base lines, were otherwise in good order. During the afternoon Mr. Whare llei, president of the club, in welcoming the visitors, said that such visits by their palcelia friends would greatly assist to foster enthusiasm in the game among members of the club. He regaided tne visit by the Manaia team as a compliment to the.club. It is now generally realised by the old Maori that for the future welfare of the young Maori he must have education and training in European ways, and the speaker regards tne game as a step in that direction. By meeting them in tennis matches, they will have an opportunity of learning much that will assist them in their future games upon the tennis court. The results were as follow, the Manaia team being named first: Men’s doubles— G. Hammonds and L. Vine 3 v. W Bei and Tnmanui 9; N. McLeod and Walker 6 v. Henry and J. Bei 9; 0. Hammonds and L. Vine 7 v. Henry and Bei 9; N. (McLeod and Walker 4 V. W. Bei and Tnmanui 9. Men's singles. —CL Hammonds 3 v. Wi Bei 9; L. Vine 4 v. Tamanui 9; N. McLeod 4 v. H. Henry 9; Walker 1 v. J. Bei 9. After the matches the teams were served with refreshments bv the girls of the club. MATCH TO-MORROW. HAWERA v. PARK. A friendly match between the Ha worn and Park clubs, A and B teams, will be played to-morrow, the A teams on the Haver a courts and the B teams on the Park courts. The teams have been selected as under: Havvera A. —Jones, Leece, McCarthy, Porritt; Misses Whittington, Wills, Knight, and Burgess. Park A. —Kururangi, Billows, Bramvvell, Budge; Mesdames R/udge, Bernard, Davy, Hunt. Havvera B.—Symes, Ryan, Palmer, Fletcher; Misses Joll, W. Huggins, M. Huggins, E Havvlcen. Park IL—Bernard, Franklyn. Freeman, Sage; Mesdames Goodwin, Dymond, Misses Kirk ancl Hicks.
