MAN CUTS HIS THROAT.

(BY TiSI.EGKAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) BLENHEIM, Feb. 11. Henry AY. ■ Carson, aged about 50, described as a water diviner, cut- his throat with a razor early this morning at tho Seddon Hotel. He then threw himself from an upstairs window. The man sleeping in the same room heard nothing, and' was asleep when wakened by the investigating constable* The deceased was a member of the Australian Expeditionary Force in the Great AVar, and was m receipt of a pension. He- told a constable weeks ago that he. had lost two wives and was tired of life. It is- believed he has a sister living at Belfast, Canterbury. FATALITY IN THE SURF. FOXTON, Feh. 11. . John O’Hagan, aged 44 years, married, a dairy farmer of Kumeroa (Wondrill©), a visitor to the- seaside, lost hi* life while surf-bathing about noon to-day. Attempts to rescue him were fruitless owing to the low tide and the undertow. Che body was washed a snore at mu- a mile north, of ■where, the bather was drowned five hours later. At the time of the drowning the school picnic from AVoodvillewas being held at the seaside. Deceased leaves a widow and .seven, children . BOY DROWNED AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, Feb. 11. A drowning fatality occurred at Shelly Beach shortly before 4 o'clock this afternoon. The victim was Lawrence William. Norland, aged 11 years, the son of Mr AA’illiam Noyland of 30, Ariki Street, Grey Lynn. It appears that Noylaml was a pupil of a. swimming class held at the baths nearby by the Ponsonby Swimming Club every Friday afternoon. The class had been dismissed at 3.30 p.m. A number of boys, including Noylaml, left tlie baths and bathed :in the tide to the west of the baths for some time. They were playing with planks floating on the surface of the water, when it was ■ noticed that they wore getting into difficulties. A man and a hoy swam out from the boa eh ami returned with a. hoy named Brewer, who wa.s in an exhausted -state. After artificial respiration had been applied, the hoy recovered and. pointing in the: direction of lire water, stated that he had seen Noyland sink; This was the first indication given that Noyland had got into difficulties. 'l'llA Ponsonby police were immediately notified, and after a thorough search Noylaml’s clothes weiyi found on tlie beach. In the meantime dragging operations were commenced, and a number of bystanders and swimmers from the baths assisted in efforts made to recover the body later. Two dinghy.s joined in the -search. The body was washed un on the beach, near the baths at 7 o’clock.

TRAM CONDUCTOR. KILLED

AUCKLAND, Feh. 11

A tram conductor, Janus M. SVi-ter, mob with a tragic death in Ammo Avenue this evening. The causes leading up to the fatality remains a mystery. The tramcar was proceeding down Anzac Avenue from the Great- South Road at about 5.45 p.m. At- the- stop, past St. Andrew’s Church the tramcar nulled up to allow the passengers to alight. Failing to get the- customary signal to proceed, the- motorman looked round and found the conductor missing. At this stage a motor cyclist, came along and informed him that Slater was lying on. the road opposite-' St. Andrew’s Church. The motorman hurried to the scene and found Slater had sustained frightful ininries about- the head and body. He hailed a passing motor truck and conveyed him to the hospital, hut on arrival there he was found to be dead.

The fact that Slater’s body was found near The rent-re nolo leads to the belief that- he was struck bv it- and thrown from the tramcar. No one witnessed the accident. Deceased was married, with two or three children, and lived at 45, Cumberland Bond. Vestmere.
