OPUNAKE HARBOUR BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Opunake Harbour Board was held yesterday, when there, were present: Messrs T. P. Hughson (chairman),- 0. H. Hurst, J. A. Pettigrew, T. 11. Sinclair, and R. C. Watson. An offer from the Public Works Department to hire a rail press to the board at 10s per month, plus cost of transport from Tangarakau, was referred to the works committee.

Messrs Viekerman and Lancaster reported on the cost of stone to date, and recommended that every effort should be made to keep the cost below £1 10s per truck. There was occasional light loading, possibly with the idea of recording a good tally. The application of E. Pickering for the lease of section 9, as a building site, at £5 per annum was accepted. The board’s solicitor advised that judgment for £3 59 (costs £1 16s) had been delivered in the board’s claim for royalties on shinglo removed from the statutory reserve. Messrs T. 11. Sinclair and C. A. Trotter were appointed t.o execute the fresh sinking fund deed forwarded by the Public Trust Office in respect of the £SOOO loan.

The secretary reported having forwarded to Messrs Viekerman and Lancaster a suggestion for the erection of a shed on the wharf to expedite the removal of cargo from boats. Provided the necessary strengthening of the wharf is effected, goods .could be unloaded straight into the shed. A communication was received from the Lands and .Survey Department defining the board’s foreshore as including the mouth of the Wniaua river, but not extending for any distance up the river, the boundary of the harbour board endowment being a line drawn between the two banks of the river at its confluence with the sea-. Messrs Richardson and -McCabe, Wellington, wrote advising the shipment of the board’s order for piles. HARBOUR WORK. The chairman reported having, in company with the foreman, inspected recent harbour works, and found that in places the driving had been very hard, with the result that some piles had split. Present driving conditions showed an improvement. FINANCIAL. The secretary reported balances on various accounts as follows: —-Loan account, Cr. £4256 6s 7 cl; fund account, Cr. £165 13s 7d; interest account, Dr. £749 6s 4d. Accounts, amounting to £IO4B 14s 2d were passed' for payment. The report of the finance committee was taken in committee.
