Gladstone: “If I had. not taken up die challenge for a legal fight I would seem guilty of the very cowardice with which you charged me. I intendtd. even had the action gone in my favour, to have express my -regrets at having used a crude phrase about your father. I now formally say them to you, and if any more copies of the book are printed, I -shall alter it and remove what offends you.” Viscount Gladstone replied in a twoline letter containing thirteen words: “Sir. I beg to acknowledge the receipt of your tetter of February 8. I remain vour obedient servant, Gladstone.”
