LARGEST MOTOR LINER.
LAUNCH OF ITALIAN SHIP. The motor liner Augustus, of the Navjgazione Generals italiama line, described as the largest motor-ship in the wond, was launched at Sestre Ponente, near Genoa, on December 13. Signorina Edda Mussolini, daughter or the Prime Minister, christened the ship. • Tne Augustus has a displacement oi 32,090 tons, a dead-weight of 10,519 tons, is 216.50 metres long and 25.50 metres wide. The height or the bridge is 28.25 metres, of the funnels 44 metres, and of the mast 68 metres. The driving power is furnished by four Diesel engines, which give 41,000 h.p. These engines work lour huge screws weighing six tons each. The vessel can maintain an average speed of 20.05 miles an liour, which exceeds by three knots the speed of the Asturias, previously the fastest motor ship in the world.
The Norddoutscher Lloyd Company has decided to place orders for two trans-Atlantic liners of the Columbus type, having a gross tonnage of 46,000 each The vessels will be fitted with engines which will enable them to reach New fork in six days from Bremenhaven, and in five days from Channel port s.
