In pursuance of a resolution passed by the Dairy Conference; the president of the Primary Producers’ Union lias lodged with the Minister of Trade and Customs a formal request asking the Tariff Board to be authorised to inquire into the protection at the present. afforded to Australian butter, cheese’and ba.con. In addition to the increases previously cab’ed. A request wa.s also made for an increase to 6d per lb on hams and bacon and to 3d on green (fresh) pork from ihe Dominion. A message .published on December 16 stated: —At the quarterly meeting of the executive of the Primary Producers’ Union a motion was carried expressing the opinion that it i® imperative that the duty on New Zealand butter and cheese he increased to 6d per lb, with a corresponding increase in the general tariff; and, further, that under .the general tariff the duty he increased to yi at ’east on process cheese. It was also resolved, in the event of the Fc'eral Government not acceding to the impost duty of 6d ner lb, on New Zealand butter that the union circularise all kindred organisations in other States impressing upon them the advisability of making this a leading question to candidates at the next Federal election.
