GRAND FETE.
FOR BOWLING AND TENNIS. AT THE PARK TO-DAY. MUSIC AND GYMNASTICS TONIGHT. Tlie warm, sunny weather may not bo best for the farmer, but it i-s ideal tor such a function a.s the fete at the Park, arranged by committees under the general organisation of 'Mr L. 0. Hooker, which opened to-day, and will be continued in the evening. As the effort is to help the Park Bowling and Ik inn is Clubs, it is certain to make a wide and strong appeal. The picturesque grounds at tlie Park in the- sports area were a hive of industry in the early forenoon preparing for the fete, and before noon' the prettily decorated stabs liad been erected along the hedge that separated the croquet from the cricket ground. The committee has certainly used them to their full advantage.
The, stalls and their directresses were as below: —Flowers Mesdames Ashton rind Curtis: cliildren’-s plain and fancy work, Mesdames Yinten and V-illars calces, Mesdames A. D. Murdoch, Barker and Catron; soft drinks, Mrs W. W. Davy; ice- creams and lollies, Mesdames AY. Adams, McGla-shan and Evans ; afternoon tea, Mesdames J. IV. Harding. Crutch, Pairkes, IV. Grant, and Hall: skittles, Mr P. Brown; hoop-la, Mr B. Burgess; Aunt Sally, Mr Jellyman.
There is also a stage for dancing and other competitions. Near the stalls 1 is the maypole, round which clu’dren, prettily dressed and with gav-coloured ribbons, will do tlieir dances, a relic of the folk amusements of Old England. THE PROCESSION. Punctually at 1.30 p.m. the cars and vehicles were lined up by the Winter Show Building,s and, preceded by the Pipe. Band, eleven in number, and tlie Roys’ Band from the Hawera School, numbering forty, went in procession to the Park. After the bands came the marshal’s ear (Mr Hooker), four decorated cars, and four decorated commercial vans, all looking very smart and artistic, also new cars -sent along by the Fanners’ Co-op., H. It Kemp, AY. O’Callaghan and R. Alort’ock and Co. It made a goodly show. They entered by the. Waihi Road gate and then swept round the sports ground in precession. Then the deco-rated vehicles vent separately, and the judging wa-s made a s below: — Best decorated car. —Airs Spagg 1, Mr Hooker 2. Most original ear.—Mr Wain a*right 'Britannia) 1, Miss Swadling 2.Commercial vehicles —Manley's (bakehouse) 1. O’Reilly’s (red and gold) 2 COMPETITIONS AND STALLS. Houp-la, Aunt Sally (Mcssts Jellyman,and H. Hall), -skittles, sheepguessing (Air Ashton) all did well. The stalls reported good business The maypole was in charge of Mrs Spragu and Airs Rudge. There were a number of evolutions performed by fourteen children. Tlie Pip-?- Band and the Boys’ Rare kept the neople interested with tboi; musical selections. The whole afternoon’s programme was well arranged and we’j carried through and reflected great credit on the, committees.
FOR THIS EVENING. excellent programme. A varied and interesting series of performances will be staged this evening, and it is certain to draw barge crowds.
After the hand procession from the Winter Show Buildings to the Park, the two bands, Hawera Municipal Brass Band and the Pine Band will play selections. E. J. Yearbury’s gymnastic display, with band accompaniment, wil. provide much interest, and then the Maoris from Fraser Road will give one of their characteristic performances. In addition there will be games and supper will be available.
