LAST MONTH’S WEATHER.
HOT, DRY SPELL
(BY TKLEGIIAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 7.
The following summary of the weather. for January has been supplied by the director of the Meteorological Department : Tlie outstanding feature of tne January weather was the heat wave that obtained in the latter half of the month. This long dry spell caused most parts of the Dominion to show rainfall totals* well below the average for tne month. Exceptions were principally owing to minor disturbances, chiefly . affecting certain localities.
For .instance, in the first week of January, there were thunderstorms* in parts on January 2 and January 6, accompanied by heavy downpours, and in the same period a cyclonic disturbance passed off the East Cape, .bringing a highly beneficial rainfall to the East Coast of the North Island. A widespread disturbance ruled between January 10 and January 16. but it was of small intensity, and accounted for the more general rainfall, especially in the West Coast and southern districts of the South Island. The early part of the month was good' for crops and the growth of grass but the warm and dry period in the latter half _ affected pasturage, particularly on light land.
