MIXED.
(By Doris Brown.j
J. sprang hurriedly out of bed one Monday morning. “Goodness,” I gasped, “it's seven o’clock and the lire not lit.” i scrambled quickly into tny clothes and rushed into the kitchen to light the fire. The wood was wet and t couldn t find the matches, but, eventual.y searching for those elusive matches, I lit the fire and had tfie kettle boiling.. 1 reached for the tea caddy, but somehow everything seemed to go wrong, for, ns i touched it, the caddy, being balanced cleverly on the edge of the mantel-piece, upset. I bad tea all over me—down my hack, in my liair and ears.
At .a st, having swept up all the tea and leaves and made the tea, 1 carried a cup in to mum. You’re (rather early, dear, this morning,” she said. “It’s hall-past seven,” i replied, I hurried over bieakfast and made my bed badly. Then, taking my school bag, J dashed off to school, i heard the bell ringing when I was half-way. “Date,” 1 cried, and ran as fast as 1 cou.d. Just as I reached school I heard the bell ring again. “That’s lunny,” f thought, for the playground was deserted. The doors were closed. J ran up the steps and tried the door. Docked! “Well, that is queer,” I said to myself. They don’t usually lock the doors. Then I listened. There was no sound from within. I. looked at the clock. Half-past nine. Well, that was light. I went and looked, at the streets. They were deserted. No shops were open, but the doors of the church were wide opne, and inside 1 could see people. Then the awful truth dawned upon me. It was Sunday. Very quickly I run home, and. hiding my bag, went inside. At dinner that J av Scamp came in with my school bag. I felt very folish, and more so when I the story came out. You should have heard Dad laugh; but I didn’t., I felt, like nnndering Scamp.
