A YOUTH DROAVNED

_ Harold Elsinore, aged 17 years-, residing with his parents at Newman, was drowned in the Maka hi river yesterday afternoon. He was one of a party which went, bathing, and while wading he slipped off -a ledge into a hole 12 feet in depth. He eoysld not swim. His father rushed to assistance, but could not retain his hold on account of the lad’s struggles, and the hoy sank. The body was recovered half -an hour later, hut efforts at resuscitation were fruitless. RAILWAY STATION BURGLED. LEVIN, Jan. 31. Burglars entered the Levin railway station early this morning and opened a safe by the use of explosive, the force of which wrecked the internal fittings of the office and broke the windows. They escaped witlP the contents, about £12.1, half of wliioh was in cash and half in cheques. The explosion was heard by the residents in the neighbourhood, but no importance was attached to it. FIRE AT LEAMINGTON. CAMBRIDGE. Jan. 31. Ota Sunday morning at four o’clock a six-roomed. wooden, unoccupied houise land detached washhouse in Burns Street, Leamington, was totally destroyed by fire. They were owned by O. V. Carmon.sway. of Cambridge, and were insured -for £450. HOT SPELL AT PALMERSTON NORTH. PALMERSTON, Jan. 31. Following a week of excessive heat, the temperature to-day reached 85 deforces in the shade, a record for the year. The temperature yesterday was only one degree less. Large- proportion of the populace availed of the Sunday trains and motor services to the seaside.
