ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
WOMAN INJURED BY MOTOR CAR. (by TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Jan. 31. Miss Eunice Comes key, aged 28, while stepping off a footpath to board a tramcar on Dominion road, was struck by a motor car driven by P R. McMahon. She was admitted to hospital. Her condition is critical. Miss Comeskey was formerly a nurso at the Auckland Hospital. A CASE OF SUICIDE. CAMBRIDGE;, Jan. 31. .'George- Wilfred; Hicks, a single man dS. years of age, residing with, his brothers and sister in Goldsmith Street, Leamington, committed suicide in the ■backyard of his home about 8.15 a.m., on Sunday night, cutting his throat with a. razor. He had not enjoyed good health, but was in his usual condition earlier in the evening. No reason was assigned for the act. ANOTHER. DR OWING FATALITY. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 31. John O. Piggot, a young farm labourer, was drowned in the Hurunui River yesterday. While bathing he slipped into a deep hole. MEMBER OF LABOUR MOVEMENT DROWNED. DUNEDIN. Jan. 31. Randa'il Georg? McDonnell, a single man, aged 31. well known locally in the Labour movement, was drowned at Taieri River yesterday while bathing below the West Taieri bridge. Some years ago the deceased was president of the Napier branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, and recently acted as secretary for the Otago Labour Representation! Committee. He had also represented Otago on the National Executive of the New Zealand Labour Party. H? took an active interest in the Otago Shop Assistants’ Union, of which he was treasurer from 1915 to 1918, and once filled the position of president of tbe Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants. At the last local body emotions he contested seats on the City Council and Hospital Board. FELL FROM MOTOR LORRY. AUCKLAND. Jan. 31. Frances Joseph Kenny, a single man, aged 24, when riding on the step of a lorry driven by Gerald Flynn between Waipipi and Waiukn, was thrown off as the vehicle rounded a corner. He was seriously injured, and died within a few minutes. CYCLIST SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES. GREYMOUTH. .Tan. 31. ffhomas Baxter, a sawmiller, about a. ago was cycling from Knmara clown the Zig-zag road, when the forks of his machine broke, precipitating the rider upon his head, resulting in; grave injury to his forehead. He underwent an operation at Grey River Hospital soon after admission, hut the injury proved fatal, death taking place at 7.30 o’clock last evening. Air Baxter, who was born 59 years ago at Hokitika, had been identified with the sawmilling industry -since the early stages on the Coast in partnership with his brother, William Baxter, now m (resident of Mamikau, Aucld and. FLOCK HOUSE TRAINEE DROWNED. PALMERSTON N., Jan. 31. A Flock House trainee, named William James Thomas Cox, a recent arrival from England, was accidentally drowned while bathing yesterday in a forbidden part of the Ra.n.gitikei River. Shortly before the tragedy the deceased called for help, but was onV “shamming.” A little later cries- of real distress were heard, hut no sign was Keen; of Cix, whose body was not recovered until late last night. The deceased was an orphan, and had no brothers or sisters.
