THE NORTHUMBERLAND.
SALVAGE OPERATIONS CONTINUE. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) GISBORNE, Jan. ,2S. Salvaging work on the Northumberland was continued to-day, the principal operation being the adjustment of a sheepskin mat forty feet square over the smaller mats at present covering the holes. This work was accomplished satisfactorily. Pumping operations are gradually reducing the water in the three damaged holds, and a powerful pulsator pump, which was added to the plant to-day, is proving of much value. The bulkheads between the damaged holds are being reinforced. It is considered probable that when all the necessary work is completed the ship will be taken to Auckland for repairs! The sea is still remaining calm. SHIP IN IMPROVED POSITION. GISBORNE, Jan. 29. The Northumberland is reported to be and is in a much improved position. - The list, to port has been eliminated, and her bows are further out of the water than at any time since the vessel entered the roadstead. The improvement is due to the success in patching the hull and the steady continuation of pumping operations. The officials ifre more than ever optimistic as to ultimate success.
