. O DR. BEAN’S ALPENSTOCK FOUND BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. BERNE, Jan. 25. An alpenstock inscribed “.Doctor J. Bean,” cast up by the Bosson’s glacier on Mont Blanc, is the grim souvenir of a tragedy 57 years ago. Bean, an American, and the Rev. Mr McCorkindale, a Glasgow minister, in September, 1870, with eight guides, climbed to the summit of Mont Blanc. They were overtaken by a. blizzard when descending, however, and lost their way in the snowstorm, which lasted a week. The bodies of McCorkindale, Bean and three guides were later found in a crevasse, but the others were .never recovered.
