AN “AVERAGE” POSER
1 lately joined a friend in a motorcar run a good distance along an excellent road, the speedometer showing that we averaged -0 miles an hour going out. The car was a new one, and returning by the same route we averaged exactly gi; miles an hour, my friend, who drove, knowing the car before, lie was relating to other motorists, that evening particulars of the trip,'and mentioned an average that the car travelled there and back. “It was a very good run,'’ said Mr. B—. “but the average was not what you say, at least not. on those figures.’’ There was then quite an interesting debate on the point, niv friend having five supporters of his view, with onlv two against, including myself, for I really could not agree with his mathematics. What was the average rate that the car travelled for the full journey there and back.
