PROPOSED ENGAGEMENT OF PONSFORD. LORD HAWKE’S CRITICISM. <2Y CABLE—PREB3 ASSOCIATION —OOP YB.IGII T. Received 1.5 p.m. ix>-day. LONDON, Jan. 19. Lord Hawke, speaking at the annual meeting of the Yorkshire Cricket Club, outspokenly criticised the proposed engagement of Ponsford as “the topic now hurting the feelings of the Australian authorities.” He declared that it was a great pity that money should be offered to draw a plaver from his own country and international cricket. “My sympathies are entirely with the Australians, who are trying to raise a large sum of money to keep him home. A player in such circumstances could only _ receive _ a most doubtful welcome in English cricket. I question whether Ponsford would be permitted to participate,. desoite precedents, when it is obvious that his duty was loyalty to his own country and those who had done so much for him.” Lord Hawke recalled that Lancashire had olayed Poidevin, MacDonald and Kevmodo; Gloucestershire, Midwinter and Ferns; Middlesex, Tarrant, Trott, Phillips and Roche.
