LAND SETTLEMENT.

DEVELOPMENT WORK BY PRISON LABOUR. BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL TO THE STAR. WELLINGTON, Jan. 19. During the coming week-end, the Hon. A. D. McLeod, Minister of Lands, and the Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, will visit the Hautu land development camp for prisoners near Taupo, with the object of investigating plans for subdivision of a large area of improved pumice land into suitable farms for selection by settlers. This will bring to completion an important experiment in the utilisation of prison labour for land improvement. Last year the prisoners cleared 300 acres which were stumped and burned off, ready for ploughing, while over 200 acres were sown in temporary pastures, and experimental areas put down in root crops. A large amount of subdivisional fencing was constructed and 13,00 trees planted for shelter belts. Large supplies of young trees are also being raised for planting at other institutions.
