AT HANKOW

ALL IS QUIET CONCESSION RESTORED GUARDED BA* CHINESE BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SHANGHAI, Jan. 7. The situation in Hankow is quiet. The main gate between the concession and the Chinese city remains open. The military police are guarding the concession in conjunction with the British naval and marine forces, who had been landed, and who are on the best of terms with the Chinese guard. There is evidence that the more moderate elements in the Nationalist Government deprecate the recent incidents. A later message states that ViceAdmiral Trvwhitt, the new Commander-ih-Chief of the British China squadron, is reported to be dashing up in a destroyer, armed with an ultimatum to the effect that Britain is unable to tolerate further anti-British outrages, and that unless they cease immediately, the concision is restored, and the molestation of nationals is ended, force will be used. SHANGHAI, Jan. 7. The Hankow concession has been handed back to the British again, and is in the control of their own police, who are operating with the assistance of the « Cantonese military police. Chung Kai Shek is to issue a proclamation denoun cing the .action of the extremists. BRITISH OFFICIAL ATTITUDE. LONDON, Jan. 7. The British official attitude regarding the Hankow situation is that a clash with the unruly native element should be avoided. The last thing desired is that the Bolshevist influence behind the mob should use the deaths of any Chin ese at British hands as justification for further violence. PROGRESS OE CAMPAIGN. SHANGHAI, Jan. 6. It is reported that Sun-Chuan-Fang has captured Fuyang, twenty miles from Hangchow. This means that Sun-Chuan-Fang’s forces have gained a decisive victory. Reports from Canton indicate that Chiang Kai Shek is leaving AVuhan to direct a new attack on Hangchow. Fighting is continuing in the vicinity of Hangchow.
