HAWERA MAGISTRATE’S COURT COMPAR ATIVE RETURNS. The returns of the Hawera Magistrate’s Court for the concluding quarter of last year, when compared with those of the corresponding .period of the previous year, show a .slight increase in the number of civil plaints entered and the amount recovered by judgment of the court. The total, of fees and fines collected, however, showed a decline, this being principally due to the fact that the total of fines collected was considerably below those of the final quarter of the previous year. A total of 204 (194) civil plaints were entered with the object of recovering £3020 13s 2d (£3652 Is lOd). Of these 35 (14) were entered by European plaintiffs against Maori defendants, the amount sought being £347 Os 3d (£l7B Is lOd). There were no (one) cases in which Maori plaintiffs sought to recover from European defendants (the . amount sued for being £9B 2s). In. cases where Europeans only were concerned 169: (179) paints were entered to recover £2673 12s lid (£3375- 18s). Altogether judgment was given on 145 (122) cases, and a total of £lßo4’ Is 3d (£1366 8s 2d) was recovered. Seven ' (seven) civil sittings presided over by the magistrate were held. Six (four) civil cases were actually tried. The number of applications heard in_ court or chambers totalled 21 (13). Distress warrants issued amounted to 6 (15); judgment summonses 58 (60) ; warrants for eommitta l ! 3 (9). The number of summonses and other processes .served hv the bailiff totalled 286 (206) while warrants executed bv him numbered 14 (12). Civil fees collected amounted to £302 18s 6d (£335 5s 6d). Licensing fees paid into court were. £4 (£4 15s). Total fees and fines amounted to £4OB 7s (£521 2s). During the period 30 (19) males and 2 (0) females were arrested. Defendants summoned to the court were 62 (105) males and 7 (6) females, a total of 69 Gil). Altogether 92 (124) males and 9 (6) females were charged with offences, a grand total of 10] (130). Nfltie (four) of the cases were in respect of juvenile offenders. Seven (seven) criminal sittings n resided over by the magistrate were held riming ihe period, and 19 (16) at which justices of the peace presided were hold .a total of 23 (26). Revenue collected in fines and payable to the various local bodies amounted to £2O 10s (£77 2s). This was divided as under: Hawera Borough Council £5 15s (£25 18s 6d) : Main Highwavs Hoard £l3 15- (£45 2s 6d); Hawera Countv Council £1 (£5 6s) ; Norma nbv Town Board, nil (15s). Four ftwo) new churns for pensions ami 80 (35) renewals were granted, two (nil) new claims were refused and one (seven) new claims and 18 (18) renewals were pending.
