LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Some days ago Mr. L. S. Muckie, oi Otakeho, a wed-known fisiiaig enthusiast, lauded a remarkably line eigin pounder brown trout on tiie Uy. It jone of the biggest taken bom a South Taranaki rivei, and to get it on the n., is considered by anglers u great achievement.
Between closing time on Wednesday and Thursday morning the refreshment room of the Patea railway .station was broken into and a small sum in cash taken from the till. The upper portions of two of the windows were broken in an effort to unlock the windows (say.-, the Press). Finding this to be unsuccessful, the thief or thieves then smashed the lower frame of one window and effected an entrance. The buighu's were apparently, on the look out lor cash only, as none of the stock was touched, the till alone receiving attention. Fortunately there was only five shillings in .small change left in the till "hen the room was locked up, and this amount was removed. The police have the matter in hand, and further developments are expected. A big conference is on foot to place the flax industry in New Zealand on a better footing. Some time prior to the holi days a proposal was made for reforming the grading system. The draft proposal was sent to all interested persons throughout the Dominion. As a result of the replies received it has been decided to call a conference to go thoroughly into all questions connected with the industry. This will be held in Wellington on January 21, and will be attended by flnxmillers, merchants, manufacturers and the Department of Agriculture. This will probably make the largest gathering of those interested in the industry that has been seen for many years."
