TENNIS.

—— -4 NEW PLYMOUTH TOURNAMENT. RESULT OF THE DRAW. A very good day's programme was played off yesterday at the Taranaki lawn tennis tournament. The majority of the fixtures were played on the New Plymouth courts, the Rotokare. courts being used to relieve congestion, and permit the most important contests to take price at the main seat of the tournament. Ths entry was slightly bigger than at Hawera, and a dozen in advance of ast year. The quality of the players, however, was phenomenal for Taranaki, and included a big contingent of Australians and New Zealander® from the Dominion championships. Fifty-six entries have been received for the men’s championship singles. In the top quarter a leading contender for championship honours is Haege, of Victoria. Possible opponents in the early rounds include MeOausland and Fitzgerald. In the second quarter of the top half N. Peach, of N.S.W., finds himseff situated dose to Malfroy and France. The third quarter doe® not appear so strong as the rest. One of the provincial, players in this may reach the semi-final. The bottom section will se measurements of strength from amongst N. Wilson (Wellington), Brewster (N.S.W.), Wallace, F. Peach, and Lampe. Miss B. Nutting, runner-up in the ladies’ singles championship at Hawera, lost to Miss E. Ballantyne (New Plymouth) in her first match. The entry in the ladies’ singles is thirty odd, and includes the Misses Lloyd and Watson, of Sydney. In the men’s doubles, Dickie and Wallace may meet the Peach brothers in, the top half of the draw. The most prominent players in the lower portion seem to be MeOausland and Dr. North, in the third quarter; andHeage, Mailboy, Fitzgerald and Brewster from the bottom quarter.
