In a, statement made to the police by James Hughes, in connection with the disappearance of the child Smith who was found in a shallow grave at the Pookmacca station, near Broken Hill, he said he put Joan Smith on a horse, which became frightened when he pulled out a handkerchief, and threw the girl. As she showed no signs ot life after a quarter of an hour, and fearing he would be blamed for platting her on the horse, he buried the body in a rabbit hole which he had deepened. He was sure, she was dead when lie buried her.
