England’s escape from the -rigours ol a white Christinas is ama-zing in face of the weather reports from all parts of Western Europe, where intense cold with snow -and -sleet gripped the countrv as far south as the Mediterranean. Spain land Italy are suffering from torrential rain storms, causing severe floods with loss of life and incalculable damage to the orange groves in Spain. More than a hundred fiishing craft were lost on the Mediterranean coast and a- -huge floating dock was blown adrift. Six persons succumbed to the cokl in Madrid.
