PREVENTIVE HYGIENE.
INSTRUCTIONS TO AVIATORS. lit CABLE-PRESS ASSOCI ITION —COPYRIGHT LONDON, Dec. 28. The flying manual of the Air Force devotes a -special section to preventive hygiene in relation to flying. It points out that a descent from high altitudes necessitates repeated swallowing for the purpose of equalising a.ir pressure within the ears by the eustachian tul>e,s connecting the throat with the ear drum's. It recommends pilots to chew gum,' which, by producing saliva, facilitates swallowing, which is often difficult during a descent, owing to I the throat being parched. It advocates “clicking” the ears (by pinching the nose and forcing air from the chest into the nose until a click is heard) when a -sudden descent is imperative. It also urges the avoidance of excessive smoking, as being likely to- lead to throat congestion. It advocates care of the teeth, and recognises officially the word “aerobatics” as defining manoeuvres outside normal tours and landings.
