ASTRONOMICAL.
ECLIPSES IN 1927. The coming year of 1927 will be of interest in the astitmomical world. There' are no less than five eclipses—three of the sun and. two of the moon; also a transit of the planet Mercury over the sun’s disc. Two •of these eclipses will be visible in Hawera, arid three invisib’e. The following are the local-times for the visible eclipses: (1) Partial eclipse of the sun, January 4, in the early morning. Begins ohrs 34min.; greatest phase, 6hrs 34min.; ends, 7hrs. 39mins. (2) Partial, eclipse of moon,, June 15, will be seen in the evening as the moon rises. The transit of Mercury occurs on the afternoon of November 10, the sun setting before the transit is finished. A telescope will be needed to see this phenomenon, with proper solar equipment for protection of the eyes. This word of warning i« added, in case anyone possessing a small telescopy may be tempted to ’ook with it at the sun, using only a .smokerl glass at the eyepiece. This is tin,safe, as the heat, of the sun is so increased after passing through the lenses of the telescope as to instantly crack the. smoked glass to pieces. The director of the Hawera observatory will he pleased to assist anybody who would care to visit the observatory for the purposes of observing the above phenomena.
