PERSONAL ITEMS.

Mr L. A. Ablett, editor-designate of the Hawera Star, arrived from the south last night, and will take up his duties with the New Year.

Sir Robert and Lady Stout, two of the oldest and best-known citizens of the Dominion, celebrated their golden wedding on Monday. A Press Association message from Sydney states that Mr. A. El. Wearne, manager of Reuter’s at Peking, has arrived at Sydney to take over the general management of the company in Australia and New Zealand, in succession to Mr. J. A. Barraclough, who is retiring.

Messrs G. Dorward, of Oamaru, and P. Jones, of Wanganui, who competed at the Hawera tennis tournament, proceeded south by the express train this morning.

Mr P. M. Brooker, of Opunake, was a passenger by the south express this morning on a' visit to Wellington.

Among the passengers .by the south express this morning were seven sisters of the Order of St. Joseph from the Hawera Convent and four from Manaia, who were proceeding to the head house of the order at Wanganui to go into retreat. A further number was expected to join -the train at Patea. The annual ceremony, which extends over a period of approximately three weeks, is attended by upwards of 120 members of the order. Mr. Robert G. Barr, well-known in Eltliam. when he was manager of the Egmont Box Factory, died at Rotorua on Christmas night. He had been in poor health for over two years, being troubled with a heart affection. He was much liked when in Eltliam, being a. genial personality, with good business habits. After leaving the Box Company he l started a sawmill on his own account iat Kopaki, "but failing health compelled him to sell out. He then went to Rotorua,, where he has lived in quiet retirement for several years. He was about 69 years of age and was born in Balrlutha. —Argus.
