Beautiful summer weather ruled for the second day of the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas race meeting, and the attendance was large. From a ragged start Te Mana took the early lead, followed bv Molto, Manly, Atone and Airtight. At the four furlong post Manly moved up and piloted Te- Mana, Royal Picture, Molto, Airtight and Macroom The same runner led round the -home turn, in ’front of Royal Picture, Airtight and Anolo, but was unable to sustain the finishing pace, and Airtight, on the inside, rattled home to win by three-quarters of a length from Royal Pietur.e with Anolo a neck back third only a head in front of Mlanly. Iciogne was left when the tapes rose, and Atapai was first out. But after half a furlong, Jazz Baby held command from Baby Bun, Eka and Atapai. Reaching the High School bend Baby Bun displaced the leader, and, going well, led Eka into the straight, attended by Jazz Baby and Chips. At the half-distance Eka looked a certainty, but Jazz Baby came again, finishing strongly to win by halt a length, with Babv Bun a head back third, and Chips close up fourth, well clear of Fortaliee, War Flame and Cynelli. Flying Shot and Grand Lupin was th< order from the barrier, but at the conclusion of two furlongs Troilus faded, and Partaga was moving up. Flying Shot and Billikins were on terms entering the straight, just clear of Grand Lupin, Turkish Fire, Partaga, and Tip Tree. There was then little to choose between th six, but in the run home Partaga stayed on best to win by a length from Grand Lupin, with Tip Tree two lengths back third, followed by Flying Shot, Billikins and Onward. Passing the stand the first time, Uralla showed the way for Gold Peak, Subjection, Bonecto and Tainakana. The same trio held the van when turning into the back, Tainakana, Bonecto and Kareao being together in the next bunch. The next obstacle brought Gold Peak and Subjection -down, and at the half mile the order was Tamakana, Uralla, Bonecto, Sea View. Approaching the last hurdle, Tamakana and Bonecto were clear of Sea View and Kareao. Sea View crashed at the fence and, in a willing burst Bonecto got the decision by half a neck from Tamakana, with Kareao three lengths back. Then came Uralla, Take Take, and Euchre.
