CO-OPERATION IN EFFORT. MEETING OF DELEGATES. • V A number of members representing the Male Choir, Operatic Society, Savage Club, and Scottish Society attended as- delegates the annual meeting of the Hawera Orchestral Society last night in response to an invitation to discuss the matter of working together for the common good of music and art in the district, and to isee bow each could hetp the' other by avoidance of clashing of dates and in any other way possible. The delegates were briefly welcomed by the chairman, who said he hoped a modus operandi could be formed, with mutual benefit bo all. It was, he added, a good and valuable spirit to encourage and must be'for the .benefit of the cause all had at heart.
Mr. Fox briefly sketched the orchestral society’s programme, which would include two concerts and said he was confident much good would come of the idea of co-operation. He suggested a federation of societies in Hawera.. Mir. Horner, for the Male Choir, said how mucih they had appreciated the help given by the orchestra and referred to the very heavy programme last season, which, made it essential that arrangements should be made well on advance for the coming season. He assured his hearers that the choir would willing work in with the. society. The same sentiment was expressed, by Mir. I>. StraChan. of the Savage Club, who isaid that his club always put on six toreros. These would not .interfere with other societies, but the committee would Ire glad to confer with other representatives.. Dr. McGhie, president of the Operatic Society, .said that there were so many societies in Hawera that committees needed to exercise care if all were to secure the utmost success and maintain their vitality unimpaired. Re said his society sometimes wanted assistance, espeoialy with a male chorus and this accentuated the need for cooperation. It hoped to- put on a comic opera and also a straight comedy this year. Mr. W. G-. Simpson, of the Scottish Society, supported the idea of a federation which could meet periodically and be a body to arrange an interchange of help as required. Mr. Townsend said he looked' forward to one large hall for .practice, a home of music and art, in the future and urged a kspirit of “give and take m the operations of the various societies.
