DIXON BANNER.

PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS. SOUTH TARANAKI MEETING. The great day for athletic school children in South Taranaki dawned doubtfully this xnorning. There were clouds in the sky, but as the morning advanced the sun assumed predominance, and by 10 o’clock the indications were for good weather. At about that hour trains, lorries, and. motor buses began to disgorge children in Hawera. They came from all parts of South Taranaki. Twenty-three separate organisations were represented. They came to Hawera to take part in the primary school sports which were held on the Egmont A. and P. ground. The rendezvous was the Winter Show building m Princes Street. Long before the scheduled hour of assembly, there was a crowd of children waiting on .the spot. Eventually all was in readiness, and the Hawera School Drum and Fife Band, in their smart yellow and black uniforms, took their station at the head of the assembled children, formed in. procession. The company proceeded amidst scenes of enthusiasm through the streets to the scene of the sports.

The principal competitions in the sports meeting are for -the Dixon Banner, and the Bennett and Sutton Cup. Schools taking part iu the. Banner nominate one team for every 300 pupils. The Bennett and Sutton Cup is for schools of not more than 150 pupils. Both competitions are teams’ points prizes. * « In all 230 boys and 150 girls took part, the entries numbering more than 1000. •

The ground was in first-class order. The competing schools, with the initials which the pupils attending them are represented by, are: Ararata (A), Eltham Boys’ Home (BH), Eltham A (EA), Eltham B (EB), Fraser Road (FR), Hawera Tuis (HT), Hawera Kiwis (HK), Hawera Wekas (HW), Hawera Moas (HM), Hawera Convent (C), Kapuni (K), Manaia, (M), Mangatoki (MA), ’ Mataipu (MU), Mokoia (MO), Oeo (CT), Okaiawa (OK), Normanby (N), Pihama (P), Riverlea (R), Tawhiti (T). Te Roti (TR), Whareroa (W).
