A meeting of the North Auckland Provincial Farmers’ Union passed a resolution supporting the Dairy Control Board, and appreciative of Sir George Elliott’s criticism of the hoard. WHANGAREI BOROUGH. WEANGAEEI, Dec. 9. The Borough Council submitted to the ratepayers yesterday loan proposals totalling £17,950. The proposal to raise £II,OOO for a new electricity transmission line was rejected, and the remainder carried. YACHTING. CHRISTCHURCH Dec. 9. Canterbury, the holders, have already received five' challenges* for the Sanders Cup (yachting) from Auckland, Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, Otago, and Southland. NEED FOR BETTER COMMUNICATIONS. GISBORNE, Dee. 9. Representations that are being made bv the Chamber of Commerce regarding telephonic communication with Portland Island lighthouse had point given to them yesterday, when the wife of one of the keepers became dangerously- ill and there was no means of summoning help. By chance the scow Konu came in sight about 9 p.m., and signals brought her close to the shore. The women was carried on a stretcher two miles and down precipitous cliffs, and was got aboard safely and brought to Gisborne Hospital this morning. Had the weather not been exceptionally favourable, ber removal could not have been effected.
