monthly meeting. At the monthly meeting of the \Y aimate VVeet County Council yesterday there were present: Mr E. Cong (chairman) and Councillors J. F. Stevenson, J. S. Mackay, J. Leslie, F. Moline, and Sir W. le Fleming. An apology for absence was received from Or. A. Gamlin. . . The engineer (Mr J. A. Hansen), reported that the staff had been -occupied during the greater part of the month on repairing the Main South. Road. Between the town boundary and the Oeo dairy factory this road had been patched, and refaced with bitumen where necessary. The tar surface had been made wider at all of the turns, and the 1 sides of the road had also been graded. About 60 chains of the Taikatu Road had been refaced with bitumen. The grader had been, right along this road and the high edge® of the metal removed. Similar treatment had been given the Om-uturangi Road. —The report was adopted. TAX ON TIMBER. The Dominion Federated Saw millers Association forwarded a circular letter stating it was understood that an appeal was being made by certain counties in timber districts to all other counties in the Dominion to support a fresh appeal to the Government to revive or perpetuate, the unjust system of levying rates oh the value of standing timber, though thf Land Amendment Act, 1926, enacted that the system ishonlfd cease as at the end ot the current financial year. The letter asked the Council’s careful consideration of the matter before deciding to support the appeal. The chairman expressed the opinion that the imposition of a rate on, ,standino, bush would prove a hardship. Cr. Mackay agreed. Cr le Fleming remarked that. ir a tax were imposed it would probably result in an increase in the price of timter The chairman said the price of timber was already so high that it could uardly be increased further. —The matter was held. over. GENERAL. The local manager of the Bank of New Zealand advised that the council s application for the increase of the limit of overdraft to £9OOO for the current year had been app roved . Ihe statutory resolution making application for this" was passed. , Cr. Stevenson drew attention to tne bad state of portions of the Normanby Etoad. —It was decided to leave the matter, together with that of improvements to the Inaha Road, in the hands of the chairman and the engineer. The staff were granted the usual, holidays for the Christmas reason. Accounts totalling £692 9s 6d weie passed for payment. The meeting being the- last of the year, the chairman extended the compliments of the season to Hie members of the council and the staff.
