HAWERA HOSPITAL.

MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT. Applications for the position of medical superintendent of the Hawera, Hospital were received and dealt with in committee at to-day’s meeting of the board. There were twelve applications, including men from all parts of the Dominion. . On resuming open meeting, it was reported that Dr. J. L. Frazer, of the Palmerston North Hospital, would be appointed, subject to confirmation by the Health Department. THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT. INTERESTING CAREER. Dr. Frazer was strongly recommended by Dr. Wylie, formerly of New Plymouth. He* states that Dr. Frazer is tactful, and has a full knowledge of all branches of hospital administration. He is a 8.A., M. 8., M.D., and B.Se., of the University of Durham; a lieut.-colonel, N.Z.M.C., and has strong recommendations from leading authorities in medicine, and especially in hospital work in England. He has been medical superintendent at Waihi, Whangarei, Whangaroa and Palmerston North. He was previouslv assistant at the Newcasfie-on-Tvno ‘throat, ear, and eye departments; and was also house surgeon. He saw service with the navy in China, and the army in South Africa. He was with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in Egypt, Salonika, and France. Dr. Frazer’s knowledge of hospital organisation is very wide and varied. At the three North Auckland hospitals he did the surgical work as well as the X-ray work, and has had experience in radiology. In addition the new superintendent has had country practice, and from 1919 to 1925 he has lectured on midwifery for the State, having taken special courses in midwifery, and womeu's diseases at the Dublin Rotunda Hospital, in Edinburgh and Newcastle. He suggests that he would be able to help the board in establishing a maternity annexe.

In recommending Dr. Frazer, Mr J. fv. Hornblow, of Foxt.on, says he is an enthusiastic, capable, and painstaking organiser and administrator, and a gentleman whose personality i ensures the co-operation and respect of the members of the staff, and the confidence of patients. A special meeting of the Hawera Hospital Board will be held on Monday, November 22, to go into the question of duties, etc., with the superintendentelect.
